Turkey Ranks 2nd in Europe for Hydropower

The International Hydropower Association released a report entitled 2020 Hydro-power Status Report, in which Turkey was ranked as the second largest hydro-power producer in Europe.

Turkey’s total hydro-power capacity of 28,503 MW accounted for 31 percent of the nation’s entire electrical generation capacity at the end of 2019.

It was highlighted that Turkey enhanced its capacity by 219 MW and was ranked as the top European country in the category of added capacity.

The report also mentions that Ilısu Dam, the first turbine of which was commissioned by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on May 19, 2020, is a ‘milestone’ in Turkey’s hydro-power ambitions.

Meanwhile, according to fDi Markets data, Turkey ranked first and had 20 percent share in Europe regarding total FDI inflows into hydro-power in the 2003-Q1 2020 period.
